Miss. Bethan Roberts
Third Grade

All about me!
Hello! My name is Bethan Roberts and this is my third year teaching here at PES! I am so happy that I get to teach such a wonderful group of third graders. I moved to Bloomington, Indiana from Colorado in the fall of 2021 and have loved every day here. I attended The University of Northern Colorado and received Summa Cum Laude with my degree in Elementary Education. I love being outside in the sun, reading books, writing, and swing dancing to some great music!

Classroom Management
My approach to classroom management includes many positive reinforcement practices. For independent behavior, I use Wow Board where the student writes their name in a box on a grid. When the board is full, I pull grid numbers and whoever's names are in the boxes I pull, receives a treat.
If a student is struggling with their behavior, I will privately ask them how they are doing and see if there is anything on their minds that may be causing their behaviors. If the behavior continues, I take minutes from their recess so they can see that their actions have consequences. In rare cases where a child has gone too far, a write-up will be issued with a phone call home.

Homework
I send homework home on Mondays in the students' Red Home Folders. I include their spelling words so they can practice them at home, a math sheet, and a reading assignment from their "Wonders" book so that they are practicing with their parents at home. Their homework is due on Friday when they turn in their Home folders.
A school-wide expectation, and practice I encourage greatly for its benefits, is that your child reads for 20 minutes a day at home. There are some wonderful benefits that come from reading daily and we would love to see those for our students. If you are interested in a brilliant read on this topic, take a look at "The Enchanted Hour" by Meghan Cox Gurdon.
