General Information
Welcome to Owen Valley High School
As the only high school in Owen County, Owen Valley High School was built in 1971. In 2006, it was renovated, receiving a new auxiliary gymnasium, an auditorium, a cafeteria, science labs, computer labs, and many new classrooms. OVHS serves approximately 845 students in grades 9-12.
OVHS offers a range of academic courses, including numerous AP and dual-credit with Purdue University, Indiana University, and Ivy Tech State College. Students can test their career choices as a by-product of their senior project or by participating in the Senior Internship and Interdisciplinary Cooperative Education (I.C.E.). Our career center, Hoosier Hills in Bloomington, provides high-tech options in auto service, design and construction, health and safety services, human services, information technology, and project lead the way.
Owen Valley has adopted the academy model of small learning communities. The Freshman Academy bridges the gap between middle school preparation and high school expectations in addition to preparing students to choose their career academy. Our four career academies align with area business and industry: life science, engineering and technology, human services, and the arts.

Attendance Policy
A student enrolled in Spencer-Owen Community Schools is expected to attend school each day. School attendance is compulsory under Indiana law. Parents who permit their children to be absent without valid excuses are in violation of the law. Spencer-Owen Community School intend to vigorously uphold the Indiana statues relating to school attendance. Excessive absences and tardies are very serious matters. Each has a direct relationship to quality education as well as development of habits that will continue through students' remaining school and work years. The school accepts the responsibility of helping develop good character habits in its students. The state law, however, is quite clear that it is the responsibility of the PARENT to have his/her child in school attendance daily. Spencer-Owen Community Schools will use the law to any degree necessary to help insure regular attendance of each student.
Administrative Processing Absences/Tardies
A. Parents are requested to phone school (812-829-2266) by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence.
B. Students must present a written excuse from the parent ON THE DAY OF RETURN to school. If no written excuse is delivered that day, the absence will automatically be recorded as unexcused. (It should be noted that the above mentioned written not does not automatically mean an excused absence.) A written note is still required even if the parent has phoned previously. Schools are required to keep written excuses for three years. An UNEXCUSED if a valid written excuse is presented within three (3) school days following the last day of absence. The absence cannot be re-classified after three (3) day period and will remain UNEXCUSED.
C. A doctor's statement must also be presented to excuse a medical or dental appointment.
D. The principal or designee will determine if the absence is excused.
E. A principal at any time may require a parent to produce a doctor's statement to excuse an illness, but certainly after the fifth day of absence at the high school. After the 10th absence at the high school a doctor's note will be required to excuse an absence.
